DETAILS:

The name of the kid who led us to the mountains is Mhretab Gebru, I photographed him on an isolated mountain near a church named Korkor Mariam. A church in which he has spent the last few years serving as a deacon and helping the old priests. When I met 15 year old Mhretab he was at a crossroads in his life, trying to choose between two very different paths. The first path is of the old world which would ultimately lead him to become a priest in one of the ancient mountain churches. The other path, a more modern one, would allow him to follow his own personal interest and pursue a university degree as he dreams to become a biologist. In Ethiopia there are many kids, just like Mhretab, that are facing similar crossroads in their lives. This is not only because of Ethiopia’s extensive modernization but also due to the severe drought that has been going on in the last few years, these circumstances are forcing many families to re-evaluate their lifestyle and the future of their children and with it the future of Ethiopia.
