I’ve admired Michael’s fascinating work for many years. To me his artwork awakens memories of the cartoons and comic books I grew up with, combined with a contemporary style and his deeply personal twist. Recognizable, yet unpredictable.
His work contains so many details and layers that it’s sometimes hard to define when a piece is finished, both for Michael and for an outside spectator. A piece of art is in many ways a part of a continuous process that you happen to capture at a certain moment.
I instantly fell in love with this particular piece, and luckily Michael decided that I could have it once it was done! At the same time an exhibition of Michaels work was in the making, and slowly but surely they realized there would not be enough completed pieces in time for the opening. So in the end, this piece became a part of the exhibition and it was sold instantly. Nevertheless, I’m grateful to have captured this image which reminds me of both the piece and a wonderful collaboration at his studio. It embodies a mutual admiration of each other’s work as well as a long lasting and continuous friendship.
