DETAILS:

This image is part of a series I made of my paternal hometown of Salzburg, Austria. Much of my work originates from the duality of growing up between two countries and how that alters my sense of belonging. These photographs are long exposures made on a 4×5 eld camera. I climbed the various city mountains and would sit and observe how the light glowed and the noise below faded to a hum. The shutter remained open for around 20-60 minutes capturing both the atmospheric light down below and the ambient light on the pathways or resting spots where I sat. The experience of making the images was very much a part of the work; spending a few hours at a time, always at night, throughout various seasons and temperatures, occasionally with my father but often alone, to sit with my city that feels like home but does not fully encompass my origins. Marisa Baumgartner was born in Washington D.C. in 1980 and raised between Washington and Salzburg, Austria. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from The Rhode Island School of Design in 2002 and her Masters of Fine Arts in Photography from Yale University in 2006. She has exhibited worldwide and had her rst two museum shows in the US in 2011. Her work is represented by High Noon Gallery in New York, NY. Marisa currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
